Man United continue to be linked with practically every name under the sun and today, Ben Chilwell is apparently back in the mix…
The Leicester City left-back enjoyed an impressive 2019/20 campaign, as his stock in the game continues to grow.
Apparently, Frank Lampard is keen on adding a left-back to his squad for the 2020/21 term, with Leicester City placing an £80million valuation on Chilwell’s head.
As of now, Chelsea have suggested a ‘much lower’ fee for the ever-improving left-back, though their £80m price-tag could be met as a ‘bidding war beckons’.
At this point, United, amongst other top Champions League clubs, are ‘monitoring’ the defender’s future.
Would United pay the £80m fee?
Well, if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks he’s good enough, yes. United gave up £80million to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester just last summer – and that has worked out brilliantly.
I do wonder whether the Reds should be prioritising other areas at this point in time, mind. Luke Shaw has come on leaps and bounds this term, while Brandon Williams is a more than capable back-up. I guess what it comes down to is how much Solskjaer believes in the pair he currently has at the club.
At this stage, though, depth on the right-wing and midfield need to take priority. This squad needs bulking out if we’re to compete on all fronts.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Chilwell and this isn’t the first time we’ve been linked with a move for him. However, it feels like a case of right player, wrong time.
I guess it all comes down to whether Chilwell moves on this summer. I don’t see United paying that massive amount of money when a move for Jadon Sancho is seemingly taking priority.
If Chilwell is still available next summer, things could certainly get interesting…
