Man United aren’t planning on hanging around this summer, with Malcolm Ebiowei the latest name added to the list of potential targets.
For the last few years, I think it’s fair to suggest that Manchester United have moved away from what they do best. That’s bringing through youth, signing young players and allowing these guys to develop.
It makes sense, then, for the Old Trafford club to get back to that. The FA Youth Cup victory a fortnight ago felt like the first step back on that path.
Now, we’re being linked with moves to bring in several young players. The latest name added to that list? Malcolm Ebiowei.
Currently plying his trade for Derby County, the teenager forced his way into the first-team in 2021/22 under Wayne Rooney’s tutelage.
Now, according to the Daily Mail, United have joined in on the race to sign the ‘exciting 18-year-old attacker’ Ebiowei. However, the Reds will face stiff competition, with Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur also credited with interest.
Ebiowei’s Derby County will drop down to League One this season, though they will likely do it without the England U16 international. He’s out of contract this summer and looking very likely to move on.
There’s no doubt about it that a move to Old Trafford would serve Ebiowei well. The likes of Charlie McNeill and Joe Hugill have flourished within our U18 side this year, scoring goals galore. No doubt Ebiowei would follow suit if he decided to come to Manchester.
Perhaps one potential stumbling block behind the move is the fact that Ebiowei would have to wait for a first-team chance here at Old Trafford. He’s already had a taste of regular minutes at that level with Derby. Would he be willing to take one step back to potentially move two steps forward in the long term?
