Man United keen on signing 35-year-old goalkeeper as De Gea back-up: report

Manchester United’s #1 jersey is completely locked up by David de Gea. However, the Spaniard could have a new back-up goalkeeper next year.

That’s according to the Scottish Sun, per the Belfast Telegraph. They say that Sergio Romero is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer, and veteran Craig Gordon is on Jose Mourinho’s list of potential replacements.

The 35-year-old is currently under contract at Celtic, with his deal having another two years to run. Gordon does have Premier League experience too, after a five-year stay in the North East with Sunderland.

Honestly, I’d be somewhat disappointed if Mourinho turned to Gordon as De Gea’s main cover; particularly with the immensely talented options already at the club. Joel Pereira is a fantastic shot-stopper, whereas Dean Henderson and Sam Johnstone have both proved their worth, while out on loan this season.

My personal preference would be to keep one of the aforementioned Pereira, Henderson or Johnstone and let them get their chance as De Gea’s right-hand man.

Make no mistake, though, losing Romero is a big blow. He’s been an excellent goalkeeper for us since Louis van Gaal signed him a few years ago, but his abilities certainly deserve regular first-team football.
