Perhaps a Man United attempt at signing Kieran Trippier is more likely than we initially thought…
Just a few days ago, we covered a story from The Guardian, who claimed that Manchester United were considering a move for Kieran Trippier. Well, that rumour is picking up pace pretty quickly…
The latest update comes from Sky Sports News, who state that United are ‘keen’ on signing the £35k-a-week (Wfoot) star. It’s also reported that United are currently ‘monitoring’ Trippier’s situation at Atletico Madrid.
When January rolls around, Trippier will be into the final eighteen months of his Atleti contract, leaving the La Liga leaders with a decision to make. Now, I highly doubt the Bury-born-defender will be arriving at Old Trafford in January, with Atletico challenging hard to win a league title this term. Simply put, they’re not going to allow a key player to leave at this point.
After letting Diogo Dalot leave on loan in the summer, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has little in the way of competition. In fact, ‘The Spider’ has started all-but two games and perhaps he needs someone to challenge him hard for the starting role – in order for Wan-Bissaka to reach his full potential…
So would United signing Trippier make sense?
Absolutely it would. Trippier has Premier League experience, while we’re lacking someone who can contribute in an offensive capacity from the right-hand side of our defence.
It’d undoubtedly be a move that interests Trippier from a personal standpoint, too. He’s from Manchester and where better to finish up your career than in your hometown? He’d be close to family and friends while playing for the biggest club in the country.
For United, it’s a no-brainer. I guess it all comes down to how serious Trippier is about wanting to leave Atleti. I understand it’s a tough call for him to make, though expect no movement to happen until next summer at the very earliest.
