Man United are looking to tie Scott McTominay down to a new contract.

Under Erik ten Hag, the Manchester United squad clear out is well underway. The gaffer is doing his utmost to free up some wages and spaces within the dressing room, though some players are proving easier to move on from than others.

Well, one man who remains firmly in the gaffer’s plans is Scott McTominay. It appears, the Scotland international has won over the coaching staff over recent months, with his goal-scoring exploits the standout feature.

According to The Sun, United are now ‘keen’ to sign the 27-year-old midfielder down to a new long-term contract, despite heavy transfer links away over the summer.

McTominay’s current contract expires next summer, though he has since ‘won over’ Ten Hag, with United wanting to open talks with McTominay, about activating the one-year extension clause in his current deal.

What’s interesting is that there is no guarantees that McTominay will sign the deal. The midfielder could look to move away from the Theatre of Dreams if he continues to be a bit-part player here in Manchester.

With Mason Mount yet to showcase his best, coupled with the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo, I find it hard to see how McTominay starts games with regularity when everyone is fit. He may leapfrog Christian Eriksen and Casemiro in the pecking order as that pair get older, but I just do not see him being a week-in-week-out selection. He’ll have to either become comfortable with that notion, or look to move elsewhere.

Honestly, if United receive some decent transfer offers for McTominay and he’s happy with the move, then I’d sell him this summer while he still has transfer value.
