Man United keeping a close eye on Kalvin Phillips’ situation: report

Man United are still seemingly looking at making a move to sign Leeds United midfielder, Kalvin Phillips.

Ralf Rangnick will remain at Manchester United beyond this summer in a consultancy role. Now, we’re still unsure as to what that actually entails – but it’s a smart bet to assume he’ll be involved in the decision-making process when it comes to transfers.

Going into the summer, the midfield area simply has to be addressed with at least one, maybe two signings, particularly if Paul Pogba leaves. United are constantly linked with a move to sign West Ham’s Declan Rice at the moment.

Over the last 24 hours, a similar type of player to Rice has also been linked with a potential Old Trafford switch; Kalvin Phillips. The story comes from 90min.com.

The Leeds United star is currently out injured, while he has left a gaping hole in Marcelo Bielsa’s midfield in his absence. That isn’t stopping the so-called ‘big six’ showing an interest in the midfielder.

Apparently, United are one of the sides who are ‘keeping a close eye’ on the 26-year-old’s situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

Phillips, who has a contract until 2024, is being tipped for huge things, with the pressure mounting on the Leeds board to tie the Englishman down to a new deal sooner rather than later – in an effort to ward off any interest.

The midfielder is a boyhood Leeds fan, which could complicate things from a Reds standpoint for obvious reasons. However, I have to assume he’s at least considering his future with the Elland Road outfit. As let’s be honest, they’re not going to be competing for major trophies anytime soon.

Would a United move make sense? Absolutely. He’d be a direct improvement for this squad, but would he start every week? Probably not. Sure, if the price is right then this would be an astute signing, but not a game-changing one…
