Man United could bring in another striker, with Ivan Toney still an option for the Old Trafford club.
Manchester United were inconsistent all over the field last season – including in the goals department.
Rasmus Hojlund carried the bulk of that burden, as Anthony Martial spent the season injured while Marcus Rashford struggled for any sort of form.
Erik ten Hag is keen to address that problem, with Joshua Zirkzee now all-but-signed. I expect an official announcement on that front soon.
However, the Reds are now considering signing another striker after acquiring the Dutchman. According to The Telegraph, Ivan Toney is an option.
United are said to be ‘keeping tabs’ on the 28-year-old Englishman, who is currently away with the Three Lions preparing for a European Championship final.
Toney, a Brentford player, returned this year after a ban for breaking football betting rules, is expected to leave The Bees this window.
It’s intriguing to hear that United could look to add a third striker. Perhaps it means Zirkzee will not be used in the number nine position, though if the Dutchman is being brought in as an out and out forward, I’m not sure this deal makes sense.
What I do know is that nothing concrete will happen over the next few days. Toney will be fully focused on the biggest game of his career in Berlin on Sunday. After that game, I’d expect to see more transfer movement on that front – be it from United or elsewhere.
If United are intent on bringing Toney in, at least they’d add another penalty expert to a dressing room that has a few decent spot-kick takers.
