Manchester United Football Club’s pursuit of Lille defender Gabriel goes on, with today’s update coming from RMC Sport.
Just a few days ago, we learned that Manchester United had ‘joined the race’ to sign Gabriel from Lille, with that story coming from the Daily Mirror.
Now, RMC Sport’s Mohamed Bouhafsi, who is based in France, has offered his take on the situation via Twitter.
Apparently, United ‘leaders’ have met with the 22-year-old’s agent in regards to a possible transfer. However, there has been no concrete offer made for the Brazilian at this stage. Both Everton and ‘especially’ Napoli are ‘in there too’.
The Lille man isn’t a player I’ve watched all-too-regularly, though he has been enjoying a breakthrough season with the Ligue 1 outfit this term – and massively impressing.
Now 22, it’s time for Gabriel to make that next step. Be it at Old Trafford, or elsewhere, the defender is seemingly hopeful of moving on to bigger and better things.
So that begs the question, where would he fit in at United?
Well, Harry Maguire is the undisputed leader of that defence, however, the other spot is definitely up for grabs.
You look at the unconvincing Victor Lindelof, the injury-prone Eric Bailly and an Axel Tuanzebe who we’re not really sure what we’re going to get from him. There’s definitely an opening there.
With Gabriel only set to cost around £20million, it’s definitely a deal worth exploring for the Old Trafford outfit. It all comes down to whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer likes him enough. The last thing this United side needs is another unconvincing centre-half. Right now, I’d much prefer to see the Red Devils chase a Premier Leauge proven, genuinely quality defender who can partner Maguire for several years to come.
Finding that is obviously easier said than done, mind.
