Man United have discovered the asking price to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich this summer.
Manchester United are now in the hunt for a new central defender this summer. Raphael Varane has left and the Frenchman’s minutes need replacing with genuine quality.
Jarrad Branthwaite felt like the top target, though the Old Trafford side may well be priced out of that move. Hence, other options are being looked at, including Matthijs de Ligt.
Links to the Dutchman have grown in frequency recently, with journalist Florian Plettenberg right at the heart of the story. He took to X yesterday afternoon to share another update.
A price has now been set for the United-linked defender, with the player set to cost at least £42m (50m euro), plus bonuses on top of that.
No official offer has been made to this point, though his agent is in touch with United. It’s stated that Erik ten Hag is pushing for the signing as he ‘really wants’ to work with De Ligt.

With each passing story, the interest in De Ligt is seemingly growing. That leads me to believe that the 24-year-old is now the top target in that area of the pitch. Perhaps a move for Branthwaite has indeed been shelved – at least for the time being.
INEOS always stated that they will not overpay for any signing. I do wonder what sort of valuation they place on De Ligt, largely due to the fact he has been deemed surplus to requirements by Bayern, coupled with the point he’s had his own injury issues.
