Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson urged Scott McTominay to choose Scotland over England, the Manchester Evening News report, per The Mirror.
Apparently, Jose Mourinho also told the 21-year-old midfielder to play his international football North of the border, after making his first-team breakthrough at Old Trafford over the last few months.
As an England fan, I wanted McTominay to choose the Three Lions, but I don’t begrudge his decision to choose Scotland. His father is Scottish, and if he feels more alliance for that country, then that’s a decision that only he can make and I understand it.
Also, when you’ve got Ferguson in your ear, a man who knows absolutely everything about football, that’s going to be a huge factor in your decision-making process.
I guess the best thing for McTominay is that he has much more of a chance to play regularly for Scotland rather than England, but the biggest downside is that the chances of them making a major tournament decreases significantly.
From a United point of view, that’s only a good thing as it means he’ll get more summers off to rest and recuperate rather than playing more football.
