Although it’s blatantly obvious Manchester United need to sign a new striker, the addition of a top-quality midfielder is also another glaring need.
Today, a new midfielder has been thrown into the mix – though it’s not the sort of personnel you’d probably expect.
In an exclusive, The Sun claim in their headline that United are lining up a ‘shock transfer’ for the 23-year-old Championship midfielder, Kalvin Phillips.
Apparently, United are ‘making checks’ on the Leeds United defensive midfielder, who is also more than capable of playing centre-back.
Furthermore, Mike Phelan went to watch Phillips play personally, as Leeds took on Birmingham City last week. In addition, coach Kieran McKenna followed it up by watching the midfielder take on Preston.
My initial thought is that United need more of an offensive-minded player than Phillips, but perhaps the Reds have plans to utilise the Englishman in the defence instead…?
Then you have to look at the transfer fee. There’s no way Leeds would be keen on selling their prized asset to the 20-time Premier League champions – with Tottenham seeing a £27million bid turned down for Phillips earlier this year.
In summary, with inflation and the fierce rivalry between the two, you’d expect it’d take at least £40million to even tempt Leeds into selling. I’d also doubt the Yorkshire side would let him go in January…
