Man United lining up ‘shock’ move to sign Luton Town’s Ross Barkley

Man United have eyes on Luton Town midfielder Ross Barkley, ahead of the summer transfer window.

Every now and then, there’s a weird transfer rumour that kind of makes a bit of sense. Initially, when I saw that Manchester United were being linked with a move to sign Ross Barkley, I turned my nose up at the thought of this deal happening.

However, the more you think about it, the more I can see the logic behind it.

It’s The Sun with the claim. On Saturday night, they ran the article, stating that United are lining up a ‘shock’ move to sign the 30-year-old midfielder, who currently plies his trade for Luton Town.

Barkley has been reborn with The Hatters, playing a major part in their bid for Premier League survival. It’s the best I’ve ever seen the Englishman play, over a long career that has often been filled with plenty of promise.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, along with his INEOS sidekick, Sir Dave Brailsford, are said to be ‘huge fans’ of the player, who they worked with during Barkley’s time with Nice over in France.

The ex-Everton man is in stunning form right now, with Barkley now on the United ‘wanted list’ as a ‘surprise and cheap’ capture.

If Luton Town do go down despite Barkley’s best efforts, there’s every chance he’ll move on this summer, with the Old Trafford side now seemingly in the race to sign the 33-cap England international.

As a back-up option, United could certainly do worse based on what Barkley has shown us this season. He’s someone who could come in and do a reliable job all across the midfield. The fact that he could be relatively cheap is another bonus, while I view him as someone who could be a decent replacement for someone like Christian Eriksen.

Initially, I was concerned when I first heard the rumour, though the more I think about it, the more I understand the idea behind this possible signing.
