Man United were heavily linked with a move to sign Jarrad Branthwaite over the last few months, though the Englishman will likely be on the move next time around.
Going into the summer, Manchester United’s top priority was to sign a centre-back. In the end, Erik ten Hag managed to acquire two top footballers; Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt.
However, it felt like Jarrad Branthwaite was the number one target for multiple months. United and Everton remained locked in discussions over the Englishman for weeks on end, but to no avail.
Everton remained firm on their £70m valuation for Branthwaite, which is entirely their prerogative.
Although Branthwaite didn’t end up leaving Goodison Park, Give Me Sport believe that the United-linked 22-year-old now has a ‘strong chance’ at moving onto pastures new in 2025.
Branthwaite still has a few years left on his £35k-a-week contract with the Merseyside club, though there’s an internal disagreement about fresh terms for the defender. That will not impact Everton’s valuation of the player.
United’s failure to get a deal done last time could mean the Reds will face competition if they do choose to make another attempt to sign Branthwaite. Real Madrid could be given a chance ‘to pounce’ as a result, as they’re planning to open negotiations with Everton in the coming months.
GMS offer no information as to whether United are plotting to return for Branthwaite, though the fact that they have signed two defenders means it’s now more unlikely than it was a few months ago.
That said, if the club decide to move on from the likes of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire,t here could be an opening…
