Man United have a battle on their hands in their pursuit of Jean-Clair Todibo.
Manchester United will almost certainly sign at least one central defender this summer. It makes plenty of sense, given the problems Erik ten Hag has been contending with in that area of the field.
Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane haven’t been able to stay fit. Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are now getting up there in age. The Reds need consistency at the back.
Jarrad Branthwaite is among the names linked with filling that void, as is Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo.
Now, over the last 24 hours, The Mirror have provided an update on that front. United are now in a fight for the signing, with Atletico Madrid keen on signing the centre-back who they have made a ‘top priority’.
On top of that, The Mirror state that Todibo ‘looks set’ to leave his current club this summer. Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Liverpool have also been credited with an interest.
United could look to use Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Nice links to their advantage here. He still remains chairman of the French club, while he’ll know the ins and outs of the Todibo transfer dealing, which does leave the Reds in a better position.
Todibo, who is believed to cost around the £40m mark, is a cheaper option than the aforementioned Branthwaite. I’d also argue the Frenchman is further along in his development, which is probably what United need right now.
In the long run, you’d like to think that Todibo is viewed as the permanent partner for Licha, assuming the Argentinian can overcome his injury issues.
