Man United-linked defender, Matthijs de Ligt, wants to leave Bayern Munich this summer.
For the early portion of the summer transfer window, it felt like Manchester United’s top target was Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite. It makes sense given the Englishman’s familiarity with Premier League football.
However, as talks progressed, it became increasingly obvious that United’s and Everton’s asking prices were way too far apart. The Reds made an initial offer totalling £43m to sign Branthwaite. Everton want closer to £70m.
As a result, United have been forced to look elsewhere. Recently, Matthijs de Ligt has been linked with an Old Trafford switch.
Now, HITC have provided an update on that front. It’s encouraging news for the Old Trafford club, as the United-linked defender has told Bayern Munich he ‘wants to leave’ this summer.
United, along with Liverpool and Chelsea, are said to be keen on signing the Dutch 24-year-old this summer.
The Bavarian side are ‘open’ to the sale of De Ligt this summer, with talks already taking place over a potential transfer.
De Ligt wasn’t happy with life under Thomas Tuchel last term, while Bayern have already agreed a deal to sign defender Jonathan Tah. Hence, De Ligt has been deemed surplus to requirements and he will be allowed to leave.
Although Bayern would prefer a straight sale of De Ligt, they would be open to a loan deal with an option to buy, as they want the Dutchman’s hefty wages off their books over the next few months.
Erik ten Hag loves to surround himself with familiarity. He will know De Ligt well from his Ajax days. This feels like a smart signing, with the Dutch defender someone who could come in and make a positive impression from day one.
