Manchester United are weighing up a move to bring in Inter Milan centre-half, Alessandro Bastoni.
There’s no doubt that bringing in a new defender is rather high on Erik ten Hag’s list of priorities this summer. After all, this is a Manchester United side who ranked amongst the worst in terms of goals conceded over the last nine months.
As things stand, Pau Torres continues to be the player most-linked with a potential Old Trafford switch. Though the Spaniard isn’t the only one out there.
Over the last 24 hours, a new name has been thrown into the mix; Alessandro Bastoni.
It’s Gazzetta dello Sport with the claim, who also credit both Tottenham and Manchester City with interest in Bastoni.
What’s interesting is that a Man United move is classed as the ‘most credible hypothesis’ for the 23-year-old this summer. We’ve already discussed the Red Devils’ glaring need for a new centre-half.
So why Bastoni?
Well, Ten Hag loves defenders with personality, according to GdS, with Bastoni bringing plenty of that to the table if a move is made.
GdS go on to state that United have ‘no problem’ in investing heavily in defenders, using the likes of Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane as major examples.
The Old Trafford club would have to spend big again here, with the report claiming Bastoni would cost at least £51m to prise away from Inter Milan this summer.
United need to invest in a match-winner at the back. Someone who’ll throw their body in front of a ball headed to goal, someone who doesn’t shirk a tackle and someone who loves playing physical football. Bastoni definitely fits that bill.
The Italian would need time to adapt and adjust to life in a new system and living in a new country. However, this feels like a genuine possibility – and one that’d definitely improve United’s starting line-up from day one.
