Man United are seemingly interested in Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria. However, they won’t have it all their own way.
The story comes from Bild’s Christian Falk, who was flawless over the summer in regards to Manchester United transfer targets. Thanks too, to the Daily Mail for bringing this one to our attention.
Apparently, United are interested in signing the 23-year-old defensive midfielder Zakaria, though they’ll face competition from both Chelsea and FC Bayern Munich.
The way Falk words it is that United and Chelsea interest has previously existed, while Bayern are the newcomers in that race. However, this is the first we’ve heard of it here at Old Trafford Faithful. At least for the last six months anyway…
Zakaria, a defensive midfielder, has impressed over the last twelve months or so as his reputation continues to grow. He obviously has something in his locker, due to the sort of clubs that are consistently being linked with moves to sign the young Swiss.
What’s interesting is that Zakaria has two years left on his current contract, meaning he’d be relatively obtainable for a reasonable price. The Daily Mail state that Gladbach are holding out for at least £45million, which, for a man of his age, is excellent value.
Check out Christian Falk’s tweet here:
The glaring issue is that United are well-stocked in midfield. In terms of outfield positions, it’s probably where the 20-time Premier League champions are at their healthiest.
Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay play in that defensive midfield role like Zakaria. However, with the Serbian getting up there in terms of age, perhaps that’s where United’s interest stems from.
Having watched Zakaria play on numerous occasions over the last year or so, I genuinely think he’d walk straight into our starting XI. He’s mobile, positionally aware and tough in the tackle. For me, he feels like a cross between both Matic and McTominay, while he’s only going to get better.
I’d doubt we’ll see serious movement on this deal until next summer, though. After all, Gladbach won’t want to lose a key player. By that point, interest in him will have only heightened and finishing in the top-four will be absolutely key…
