Man United looking at Pedro Goncalves, Reds monitoring him this season: report

Man United have added Pedro Goncalves to their list of transfer targets.

As we all know, last summer was jampacked with stories linking Manchester United with a move for Jadon Sancho. In the end, the right-wing position would not be addressed with a move for a senior player. Instead, Amad Diallo would be signed.

Fast-forward six months and rumours are still claiming United will make their move for a right-wing. Today, a new name has been added to that ever-growing list; Pedro Goncalves.

The story comes from The Telegraph, who claim that United are eyeing a move for the 22-year-old winger, who has an impressive 15 goals in 22 games this term.

Currently plying his trade for Sporting CP, it’s claimed United’s recruitment team have been ‘looking at’ the Portuguese winger. Apparently, the Old Trafford club have been ‘monitoring’ Goncalves throughout the 2020/21 season.

With a buyout clause of £51.7m, Goncalves represents someone who’d be considerably cheaper than the aforementioned Sancho. Although both are slightly different players.

Although Diallo scored on his European debut, United still need some further quality out wide. Let’s be honest, it’s an area that should have been properly addressed last summer but sadly, the club just couldn’t get a deal done.

Do I think Goncalves is as good as Sancho? Probably not, but United’s record when dealing with Portuguese clubs is excellent. Just look at Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and more recently, Bruno Fernandes.

Goncalves represents someone who’d bring something different to the table. It’d also free up Mason Greenwood, who is probably chomping at the bit to be handed regular starts as a striker rather than being stuck out on the wing.
