Manchester United are looking to strengthen in three key positions over the summer, according to the Daily Mirror.
They say that Jose Mourinho wants to bring in a centre-back, central midfielder and left-back, and you’d have to say that these areas have been problem positions ever since the manager took charge at Old Trafford.
In terms of centre-halves, Phil Jones has struggling while also being out injured for long periods (again), Chris Smalling just isn’t good enough, making some huge mistakes, whereas both Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo have been on the treatment table. As for Victor Lindelof, he’s improving but isn’t anywhere close to being ready yet.
The report names Toby Alderweireld as a top Manchester United target, and what a stunning signing that would be. If the Belgium international cannot be prised away from Spurs, Borussia Dortmund’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos has also been cited.
Onto the midfield we go, then. Marouane Fellaini hasn’t committed to a new contract, whereas Michael Carrick is retiring in the summer. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is the man who has been named for this spot, but I’d like to see at least two new faces signed.
Perhaps the most controversial position is the left-back slot. Mourinho trusts Ashley Young but he’s hardly a natural out there. Then you have Luke Shaw, who’s pretty much the opposite, and for whatever reason, the manager hasn’t put any faith in the Englishman… Although Danny Rose is named by The Mirror, I’d like to see Juventus’ Alex Sandro signed.
