Man United could use Harry Maguire in any potential deal to lure Jarrad Branthwaite to Old Trafford.

Manchester United will sign a defender of some description this summer. The inconsistencies in that area of the field means it’s an inevitability.

The name most-linked with filling that void is Jarrad Branthwaite. The Englishman has enjoyed a top season for Everton, though the Merseyside club may have to part ways with him due to financial struggles.

With money somewhat tight for the Red Devils too, they’re looking to utilise a player in some sort of swap deal, in order to lower the cash cost to bring Branthwaite in.

According to the Daily Star, United are looking to use 31-year-old Harry Maguire as ‘bait’ in their attempt to sign Branthwaite.

Everton value the centre-half at around £70m, though the Star say that figure could ‘easily increase’ as we edge closer to the summer.

The Toffees would prefer to keep ahold of Branthwaite, though United are looking to use fellow England international Maguire as part of any deal, to swing the transfer in their favour.

United tried to move away from Maguire last summer, though the player chose to stay. He played well all season long, showing his commitment to the Red Devils throughout. Hence, I think it’d be a mistake to let him leave.

At the end of the day, Maguire has been the most consistent centre-back at the club this season. I’d much prefer to see him stay over some of the other options already at the club.

I do understand the logic behind trying to use him in any deal, though. Everton would be getting a ready-made replacement for Branthwaite, rather than having to scour the market to find someone else to bring in.
