Man United enquired about the possibility of signing Presnel Kimpembe over the summer.
There’s no doubt that particularly at the beginning of the summer transfer window, it didn’t really go according to plan for Manchester United.
Erik ten Hag and the board were running around frantically trying to get signings over the line, with many deals falling by the wayside early.
A new centre-back was an absolute necessity. In the end, Lisandro Martinez was the player signed. We’ve all been mightily impressed by the Argentine, though the club looked elsewhere first…
United fans will be familiar with the name as the France international played some excellent games against us in the Champions League over a two-year period – including scoring at Old Trafford.
The report suggests United were amongst three European sides who made their move to sign Kimpembe, though the player eventually stayed put at Paris Saint-Germain.
Le10Sport states that no concrete offers were eventually put on the table for Kimpembe, which leads us to believe that the player made it pretty clear that he never really had any intention of leaving the Ligue 1 champions.
Old Trafford Faithful’s verdict on a Man United move for Presnel Kimpembe
This feels like a move as well as Martinez, rather than instead. I could’ve easily seen United signing two centre-backs this time around, particularly given how poor United looked in that area of the field before Ten Hag arrived.
Obviously, nobody knew how Raphael Varane’s body would hold up. So far so good as the Frenchman has been excellent. It was absolutely a gamble to bring in just the one central defender over the summer, though.
I’d fully expect United to invest further in this area of the field sooner rather than later. Is Kimpembe that guy? Well, to us it feels like the player always wanted to stay put in France.
