Man United made summer approach to sign Cristian Romero, rejected by Spurs

Man United are said to have made a summer approach to sign Cristian Romero, though the approach was turned down.

Manchester United made two top class defensive signings over the summer, bringing both Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt to the club. We have a small sample size, though both look promising.

Perhaps they were not the first-choice options for the Old Trafford side. After all, links to Jarrad Branthwaite were plentiful. Another name was possibly in the mix; Cristian Romero.

The Tottenham Hotspur man enjoyed a successful 2023/24 season from a personal perspective, catching the eye of some European giants; including United.

Journalist Gaston Edul shared the latest on that front. He claimed that United, along with PSG and Real Madrid, made a summer move to sign the 26-year-old.

However, that approach was immediately turned down as the Argentine is integral to Ange Postecoglou’s current plans.

Spurs refused to put an asking price on the Argentine’s head, though they’re expecting renewed interest next summer, with Romero having just two years left on his deal.

Romero is a typical South American defender who loves to play aggressively and perform on the front foot. He’s already proven that he has what it takes to play at the Premier League level and there’s no doubt he’d be an upgrade to the squad.

However, Spurs would rather sell to anyone but a fellow Premier League side. That alone makes it highly unlikely that Romero would ever make the move to Old Trafford – unless he winds down the last couple of years of his contract and joins on a free transfer.
