Man United have added Lens defender Jonathan Clauss to their list of possible transfer targets.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United squad is slowly starting to take shape.

The Dutchman has delivered two wins from two pre-season matches, with his style and tactics slowly starting to be implemented.

New signings will assumingly speed up that process, as Ten Hag looks to bring in players who fit his system.

In amongst all the madness of the Melbourne Victory game yesterday, one transfer story got lost.

The Evening Standard linked United with a move to sign Lens defender, Jonathan Clauss.

According to the story, United are ‘ready to rival’ Chelsea for the signature of the Frenchman.

Chelsea have been monitoring Clauss for over a year, but United have ‘now approached’ the 29-year-old full-back about a possible Reds transfer.

Both sides are ‘admirers’ of the players, who is valued at around £8m. Whether United pursue the Lens man is dependent on other players leaving first. The same goes for Chelsea.

Clauss has had a couple of impressive seasons for Lens over in Ligue 1, while the price tag would definitely make this an astute piece of business.

However, United seemingly aren’t willing to enter the season with four recognised right-backs on the books. As things stand, the aforementioned Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot and Ethan Laird are all still at Old Trafford. You’d assume that at least one of these players would have to make way before a move for Clauss happens.

By that time, there’s a good chance the Frenchman has already sealed a transfer elsewhere as he’s also attracting interest from Atletico Madrid and Marseille.

Personally, if Ten Hag has asked for Clauss, I’d sign him now and worry about moving someone on after. Then again, that’s easy for me to say as it’s not my money…
