Man United have apparently enquired about Everton striker, Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
As we all know, Anthony Martial is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s go-to striker. However, it’s definitely fair to say that Odion Ighalo is a pretty average back-up. Don’t forget the Nigerian is only here until January, too…
That leaves United with a decision to make. Do they go from January-June without a back-up for Martial? Sign someone in January? Or sign someone now, giving them time to settle in.
My preferred choice would be the latter, though we know how slowly this United board operate, so I’m not holding my breath…
It does seem as if the Reds are putting the feelers out in regards to potential signings, though, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin the latest to be linked with an Old Trafford move.
The story comes from The Sun, who state that United have made an enquiry about the striker, who hit an excellent hat-trick this weekend against West Bromwich Albion.
However, in their title, The Sun also claims that United were put off by Everton’s £80m valuation – which was before the 23-year-old struck three times this weekend. No doubt that price has gone up since…
Calvert-Lewin has scored 12 goals in 23 games under Carlo Ancelotti as he continues to improve as a player. So-much-so that the Englishman is tipped to be in Gareth Southgate’s next Three Lions squad. There’s also interest from Manchester City and Chelsea.
The Sun actually linked United with a move for Calvert-Lewin back in January, so this interest from Solskjaer isn’t new. However, the asking price could be the big issue here.
The £80million question
Simply put, I just don’t see United paying that much money for someone who’ll rotate in and out of the team, particularly in the current climate.
If they’re baulking at paying £108m for Jadon Sancho, I find it hard to believe United are going to pay £80m+ for a lesser player. Maybe in the future if Calvert-Lewin continues to improve, but right now, the Reds will probably look elsewhere.
