Man United have reached out to Valencia over a potential move to acquire goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili.
I’d imagine going into the summer transfer window, Manchester United are looking at strengthening in pretty much every area.
In fact, the one area where I was the least concerned about the Red Devils is exactly where they’re looking right now; goalkeeper.
According to a report from AS, United have decided to ‘make contact’ over the possible signing of Valencia’s 21-year-old shot-stopper, Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The Georgia international emerged as a regular starter for the La Liga club in 2021/22, turning heads across Europe. As things stand, he’d cost around £13m (€15m) to buy outright.
However, as you’d imagine, Valencia are doing all they can to tie Mamardashvili down to fresh terms beyond his current contract – which expires in the summer of 2024.
In an effort to convince the young man to make the move to United, AS claim they’d be willing to make Mamardashvili their Europa League number one.
This tells us that as things stand, David de Gea is likely to remain first-choice under Erik ten Hag – at least for the time being anyway.
Once again, I do wonder where this leaves Dean Henderson. For me, the Englishman seems like a better fit for the possession-based style of play that Ten Hag likes to employ. I’d be genuinely surprised if the club were willing to just let him leave without giving him a proper shot at the number one jersey.
It has been a frustrating campaign for the 24-year-old shot-stopper, mainly being rooted to the substitutes bench without really being given any sort of playing time. Alas, before we go out there spending money on another back-up, why not see what we have in Hendo?
