For all their faults over the last half-decade or so, Manchester United have gotten the goalkeeper position absolutely spot on.
That’s why the latest transfer rumour coming from De Telegraaf, translated by The Mirror, is somewhat surprising.
The Netherlands media outlet are claiming that United have ‘made contact’ with the agent of the 23-year-old goalkeeper Andre Onana. Apparently, both the Red Devils and Tottenham Hotspur have ‘expressed an interest’ in signing the player.
Hailing from Cameroon, Onana has emerged as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe over the last two years, with a fee between £34.5m and £43m being talked up by De Telegraaf.
Although Onana’s talents simply cannot be denied, why would United need to bring in another shot-stopper? David de Gea only recently signed a new, long-term deal at the Theatre of Dreams, while Dean Henderson is proving his worth during his time on loan at Sheffield United.
If anything, the goalkeeper position should be at the very bottom of United’s list of needs right now, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Edward Woodward should be focusing their attentions further up the field.
It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out, but honestly, this just seems like another case of a media outlet throwing United’s name in amongst it just to add a little extra spice to the transfer story…
