As a proposed Man United move for Jadon Sancho continues to waver, there’s now talk of a Douglas Costa bid…

The story comes from Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport, who ran the story on Friday. The translation came today, courtesy of the Manchester Evening News’ United transfer live blog.

Anyway, the report from CdS claims that United have tabled an opening offer of £27million for the 29-year-old, with the Reds remaining firmly interested in the attacker – who they view as an alternative to Jadon Sancho.

However, the report also claims that United’s £27m offer for Douglas Costa falls just short of Juventus’ valuation of the player…

At the very least, this backs up United’s interest in the Brazilian. Just under a week or so ago, we covered a story from Sky Sports News, who claimed that the Reds were indeed keeping tabs on Costa.

MEN Sport go in a different direction, though. While covering this CdS claim, they state that United’s interest in Costa has cooled after they initially explored a loan deal.

Would Costa fit?

Honestly, a loan deal would have made sense. In the current climate where money is tight, a short-term move for Costa would’ve filled a need for the 2020/21 term. Who knows, in twelve months time, it could make sense to return and make another bid for Sancho – provided a deal for the Englishman can’t be reached this term.

To us here at Old Trafford Faithful, it certainly feels like Sancho remains the number one target. At this point, though, a deal looks pretty unlikely. Either Borussia Dortmund’s demands are too high or United are refusing to pay up. I’d guess in actuality, it’s somewhere in the middle…

I just hope that United sign someone who can add some depth to a thin attack. Sure, United have quality options in the final third, though if one of the regular starters pick up an injury, we’re suddenly looking pretty thin on the ground.

Costa would undoubtedly change that, though he’d only be viewed as a stop-gap. Sancho should be the number one target, failing that, I’d like to see the Reds move for David Brooks. He’s a cracking young player who knows the English game. I’d also like to think he’d be slightly cheaper due to Bournemouth’s relegation.
