Man United make first contact over Wesley Fofana signing: report

Man United are interested in signing a centre-back from Leicester City who is to cost £80million. We’ve been here before…

A couple of summer transfer windows ago, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent £80million to acquire Harry Maguire’s services. Our defence has drastically improved since the Englishman’s arrival, while he hasn’t missed a single minute of Premier League action since.

For me, it was an excellent signing, though others will disagree.

Well, United are seemingly hoping lightning strikes twice. According to Foot Mercato, translated by Leicestershire Live, United are now looking at Leicester defender Wesley Fofana.

According to the report, United have made the ‘first contact’ over signing the 20-year-old, with the Reds claimed to be ‘huge admirers’ of the Frenchman’s.

Fofana only made the move to England just last summer, leaving St Etienne in October, then taking the Premier League by storm. Two-footed, great in the air, tough in the tackle and good on the ball. The young man has been mightily impressive this term and it’s easy to see why United are interested.

The article states that a fee of around £80million would be enough to get the deal done, with Leicester paying around £35million to acquire the centre-half just six months ago. That’d be some hefty profit.

First of all, credit goes to Leicester. They have the best recruitment in the business and it’s not even close. Sure, they’d love to keep ahold of the 20-year-old, but if an irresistible offer comes in, they’d have no choice but to accept.

Fofana’s Premier League experience is his biggest selling point, while he’d offer a consistency that Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have failed to deliver on.

Heck, if Leicester are dead-set on keeping Fofana, I’d even look at Caglar Soyuncu, who himself is a brilliant centre-half.

Would Fofana be a good signing for Man United? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
