Man United formally make contact over David Alaba signing: report

If you believe reports, Man United are seemingly eyeing a move for Bayern Munich defender, David Alaba.

Defensively, Manchester United have offered up a real mixed bag this season. From game-to-game, you never know what you’re going to get from the Red Devils’ backline.

Which is why it shouldn’t be surprising when the Old Trafford club are constantly linked with experienced defenders. Over the last 24 hours, Bayern Munich’s David Alaba is the latest to be talked up as a potential United signing.

The story comes from AS, translated by the excellent Sport Witness. The story is actually based on Real Madrid’s interest in Alaba, though Los Blancos have a problem; Manchester United.

Apparently, United have made formal contact over signing the 28-year-old, as they have contacted the player’s agent. At this point, it’s worth noting Alaba has just six months left on his current deal – leaving the Albanian with a massive decision to make about his future.

What makes this saga even more interesting is that Manchester City are also keen. However, at this point, it’s stated that United are the ones expected to ‘move strongly’ for Alaba.

What would Alaba bring?

First and foremost, versatility. We’re talking about someone who is a natural left-back, though Alaba can also play at the heart of the defence – particularly in a back five.

Experience is key. Alaba has played in a title-winning side for years and years while he also has international experience aplenty too.

The fact that Alaba could potentially be available on a free makes this move an absolute no-brainer for us here at Old Trafford Faithful. He’s someone who’d walk straight into our side and immediately make us better.

The problem? Several other top clubs are probably thinking the same thing. You’d imagine having Champions League football on offer is the absolute bare minimum requirement, though winning a trophy or two this term would definitely improve our odds…
