Man United make Gareth Southgate their ‘top choice’ to replace Erik ten Hag as manager

Man United have eyes on Gareth Southgate, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe identifying the Englishman as the man to replace Erik ten Hag.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to suggest that Erik ten Hag is under pressure at the moment. No doubt the victory over Liverpool eased the tension somewhat, though the only way he’d feel truly safe going into the summer is by securing Champions League football.

Remember that Ten Hag isn’t an INEOS choice. For Sir Jim Ratcliffe, it could make things easier to sack the Dutchman and bring in a manager of his own choosing.

The Daily Star believe Gareth Southgate is that man. According to their latest information, United have identified the 53-year-old as their ‘top choice’ to replace Ten Hag as manager.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has Southgate as his ‘No.1’ choice heading into a crucial summer transfer window for the Old Trafford side.

What’s intriguing is that Ratcliffe is said to be growing ‘increasingly confident’ that he can lure Southgate away from the Three Lions job, with his current deal expiring in December.

The FA are pushing Southgate to sign a new deal at this point in time, though the England boss has stressed that he will not be deciding on his future until after EURO 2024.

This would be a problem for United as they would prefer to have their manager in place sooner rather than later.

As someone who has watched England and United religiously for many years, this feels like a backward step. I have to be honest, I’d be massively underwhelmed if Southgate was the choice. No disrespect, I just don’t think he’s all that good tactically, while remembering he’s going to have to fight against some of the best manager’s in the world at least twice every season.
