Man United have made a better offer for Jarrad Branthwaite.
Manchester United Football Club have to sign a defender of some description this summer. The Red Devils lost Raphael Varane on a free transfer, while his minutes need replacing with genuine quality.
Although the Frenchman spent a lot of time out injured, he is still regarded as a top tier defender when fit.
Erik ten Hag needs to bring in someone reliable. With the Reds suffering from major injury issues all season long, consistency is key with this move.
Initially, Jarrad Branthwaite felt like the top target. A move to acquire the Englishman died down due to Everton’s asking price.
However, over the last 24 hours, the Reds have returned to the negotiating table for Branthwaite. It’s the Daily Mail with the story, claiming an ‘improved offer’ has been made for the signing.
Everton rejected an opening bid of £35m last month. This time around, United have made an offer that stands at £45m, plus an extra £5m available in add-ons.
It’s claimed the Reds are prepared to give Branthwaite a long-term £160,000-a-week contract, while the Old Trafford side hope this latest offer will tempt Everton back to the negotiating table.
What this means for any potential Matthijs de Ligt move remains to be seen. Will United sign one player? Or both?
It does feel like Branthwaite remains the top choice for Ten Hag and United, hence why they’re making another move to bring in the Englishman before sealing a deal to acquire De Ligt.
Everton themselves want around £70m for Branthwaite, meaning United are still about £20m short. Let’s see how they respond to this latest offer.
