Defenders aplenty have been linked with a Manchester United move this summer. Well over the last 12 or so hours, another name has been thrown into the mix.
It comes from the usually reliable Gianluca Di Marzio, who claim that the Red Devils have made an enquiry for the talented 21-year-old defender, Nikola Milenkovic, ‘two days ago’.
The AFC Fiorentina centre-back was on United’s radar back in January when the Old Trafford outfit tabled a €40m (£36m) bid, but that didn’t meet Fiorentina’s €50m (£45m) demands…
Born in 1997 (yes, that makes me feel old too), Milenkovic made 36 appearances across all competitions in the 2018/19 campaign, in what was truly his breakthrough season in professional football.
Hailing from Serbia, Milenkovic is a robust, physical defender who’s great in the air and positionally sound. Although not the quickest centre-half, his reading of the game is excellent so he rarely needs to use sheer speed…
Again, Milenkovic fits the mould of the young player that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking at signing, but make no mistake about it, this would be a gamble due to his lack of Premier League experience.
For me, United need that on-field, Premier League-proven leader. Harry Maguire or Toby Alderweireld is atop my list, although acquiring those guys may be easier said than done…
