Manchester United’s search for a centre-back this summer has been well documented. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been unsuccessful in the pursuit of that so far.
Several names have been linked with a potential Old Trafford switch, Harry Maguire’s name is popping up on the back pages most often. However, it seems as though that, with less than two weeks left in the window, the Baby Faced Assassin is now making serious approaches for other players.
The story comes from Portuguese media outlet O Jogo (Wednesday print), translated via Sport Witness. They state that United have made an attempt to sign the 22-year-old SL Benfica defender, Ruben Dias.
Apparently, the Red Devils tried to sign Dias, although the offer was turned down by the Portuguese giants. Although no figure was made, the centre-back does have a €66m (£60m) release clause, so the offer was obviously below that.

It’s well documented, but Benfica have made a bucket-load of cash from player sales this summer so there’s no real need for the Portuguese side to sell unless their hand is forced.
That leads me to believe United will have to stump up £60m to sign Dias if they want him this summer, which is some way short of the £80m+ asking price placed on Maguire’s head at the moment.
Dias is a top player, although at this point United need experience rather than signing another young, talented defender. For me, although more expensive, moving for Maguire seems like the correct option at this juncture, but The Reds better act quickly as time is running out.
