Man United make significantly improved offer to Matthijs de Ligt: report

Without question, the man-of-the-moment is Ajax centre-half Matthijs de Ligt. It certainly seems as though the 19-year-old will be on the move this summer, but his destination is still unknown.

I’ve always thought that Manchester United have a monumental task ahead if they’re to lure the top-class defender to Old Trafford – particularly without Champions League football on the table.

However, Catalan media outlet Sport, translated via Sport Witness, have offered Reds fans an extremely encouraging update… They’re now claiming that United are ‘one of the top contenders’ to sig De Ligt after ‘significantly improving’ their £12.3million-a-year offer to the Dutchman.

Furthermore, Sport say that United’s offer is ‘tempting’ with the club hopeful the centre-back will say ‘yes’ to an Old Trafford move. Apparently, the Reds have given De Ligt an ultimatum and if he says no, they’ll discard his signing and presumably move on to other options.

You think that after years of following and writing about United, I’d be able to contain my excitement. However, if there’s any chance that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can land this boy, the club must do whatever they can.

De Ligt is a player you can build your team around and there’s no doubt that he’d instantly become one of the best players at United. He wouldn’t come cheap, though, and you get the feeling that beating out FC Barcelona’s competition isn’t going to be easy.
