Man United make surprise N’Golo Kante enquiry: report

Man United have been linked with a move to sign Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante this summer.

Yes, you read that correctly. Now, my initial thought on this story was that there’s no way Chelsea would sell to a direct rival. Apparently, though, they’re not wholly against the idea.

The story comes from The Mirror on Sunday, who state that United have made a ‘surprise enquiry’ to sign the World Cup-winning 29-year-old.

According to the report, the Frenchman is attracting interest from Inter Milan as well as the Old Trafford club.

What I found most intriguing is that The Mirror state that Chelsea are open to a sale for the right price. After all, the Stamford Bridge outfit have spent £200m this summer, which is an awful lot of money. It’s only heightened by the fact that they’re still spending huge despite COVID-19 still wreaking havoc.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is labelled as a ‘long-time admirer’ of Kane (heck, who isn’t?), while believing the Frenchman would add extra muscle to the midfield.

So what’s the issue?

Well, I have one big problem with this. United have already signed Donny van de Beek during this transfer window. Does the club really need another midfielder?

Sure, Kante represents an upgrade and he’d be an immediate starter. However, unless you can sell Nemanja Matic, who only recently signed a three-year contract, what’s the point?

It becomes a case of too much quality in one area, while having little-to-no depth in other positions. For me, there are far too many pressing needs for United to sign Kante. We all know how slowly this club operates in the transfer market so I’d be surprised if they could work on two deals simultaneously…

For now, leave this one alone. However, keep an eye on it. If Chelsea still want to get rid next summer, I’d be keen more than keen…
