Man United may look to sign centre-back, Ibrahima Konate named as target: report

Man United are being linked with a potential move to sign Ibrahima Konate.

A new centre-back always felt like a top priority for Manchester United. Well, now Eurosport have confirmed as much.

The media outlet state that United are prepared to ‘ramp up’ their search for a new defender, with Eric Bailly’s future up in the air. The Ivorian is constantly injured, unreliable and seemingly unwilling to negotiate in regards to signing a new contract.

Joules Kounde, Pau Torres and Raphael Varane are named as possible targets. However, RB Leipzig’s Ibrahima Konate also gets a mention.

Konate is currently being eyed by Liverpool, while United have now added the 21-year-old to their list of defensive targets. What’s interesting is that it’s claimed Leipzig are willing to sell Konate if the right offer lands. Apparently, he’ll cost around £34million.

Suddenly, Konate is being talked up as someone who could potentially be better than his partner, Dayot Upamecano. That alone should tell you just how talented the Frenchman is.

It goes without saying, finding a partner for Harry Maguire has to be considered a top priority for the Old Trafford outfit. This team has leaked far too many cheap goals this season, which is a large reason to why our Premier League title bid fell short quite early on.

Addressing that with real quality could be the difference in us making a real shot at the Premier League next season. However, Konate is young and has no experience of playing within the English game. He may need time to settle in and adapt – whereas United would ideally sign someone who can come in and make a difference straight away.

At £34million it does feel like a gamble worth taking, while if United can qualify for the Champions League, it may give us an edge over Liverpool in the race to sign Konate if Jurgen Klopp’s side miss out…
