Man United may yet test the waters with a move to acquire Ivan Toney from Brentford.
Manchester United Football Club have added Joshua Zirkzee to the side this summer, though the Dutchman isn’t classed as an out-and-out central striker. With Rasmus Hojlund injured, suddenly, the Red Devils have no senior forwards who are fit and available.
As a result, the rumours linking the Old Trafford club with a move to bring in another forward are still rife. The name that’s appearing on the back pages most frequently right now is Ivan Toney.
The England international is back playing after a ban for breaking betting rules and regulations, though he only has one year left on his Brentford contract. Toney has made no secret of the fact that he’s willing to move onto bigger and better things during this transfer window.
The Independent have provided an update on that front, claiming that United may test Brentford’s resolve to keep the prolific goalscorer during this window. Apparently, the Reds could make a loan offer for Toney, with an obligation to buy. Chelsea are also keen on the 28-year-old.
Brentford are said to be holding out for around £60m to let Toney leave this summer, despite the fact he can walk away for free in twelve months’ time.
It’s stated that although United’s current priority is in midfield, a new striker is also a big need, particularly if Hojlund’s injury woes continue.
If United can somehow pull this off, it’d be monumental. Toney is a proven goalscorer and that’s exactly what the Old Trafford side need right now, particularly in this time of uncertainty and struggle.
On a loan deal, with an option to buy next summer, this could also help with FFP, with United getting a ready-made player now but not having to pay for him in full until next summer.
