Man United amongst the sides monitoring the development of Ben White

Man United are seemingly still in the market for a centre-half, with Ben White once again linked with an Old Trafford move.

Red Devils interest in Ben White is nothing new. In fact, he was linked with a United switch over the summer at one point.

After all, it seems clear (to me anyway) that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still unconvinced about his defensive line, despite having ample options in that area of the field.

Let’s be honest, Harry Maguire aside, there’s no real consistency there. Victor Lindelof blows hot and cold, Phil Jones is always injured, as is Eric Bailly. Axel Tuanzebe is still a relative unknown while you can’t really count on neither Marcos Rojo or Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Now, according to Sky Sports News, United are amongst the sides ‘monitoring the development’ of the emerging 23-year-old White, who has started all ten league game for Brighton this term.

Having only signed a new Brighton contract this summer, the Englishman has massively impressed in the Premier League, after an excellent campaign while on loan at Leeds United in 2019/20.

There are no surprises then, that his stock continues to rise, with other clubs like Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also credited with an interest in White.

Would a Man United move for Ben White make sense?

First and foremost, he wouldn’t come cheap. After all, Brighton rejected some hefty bids from Leeds United over the summer to keep him. White has only improved as a player since then.

However, you get the impression he’d be an excellent signing and the perfect partner for the aforementioned Maguire.

My only major concern is that White is currently playing in a back three, giving him that extra protection and comfort having another centre-half alongside him, leaving him less exposed.

With that said, he’s already by far and away better than anything United have (Maguire aside) and this one feels like a no-brainer to me. Pulling it off won’t be easy, though, as Brighton are tough negotiators in the transfer market.
