Man United most likely to clinch Varane deal, could cost as little as £45m: report

Man United are the club most likely to seal a deal to sign Raphael Varane.

A centre-half signing should arguably be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top priority at Manchester United.

Sure, adding a Jadon Sancho would be brilliant, though goals haven’t been the problem – it’s stopping them at the other end…

The name most linked with an Old Trafford switch is Raphael Varane. It feels as though we’re getting an update in that saga almost every other day. Thankfully, we’ve got you covered here.

Today’s update comes from The Athletic (subscription required), with the Manchester Evening News relaying the information via their live blog.

The Athletic name United as the club most likely to seal a deal to sign the 28-year-old, while Real Madrid could sell Varane for as little as £45million. It’s claimed Varane is genuinely keen on moving on from Real Madrid this summer.

Furthermore, their report states United are mulling over whether to invest big money in Varane, or move for a younger target like Pau Torres, Joules Kounde or Ben White.

The positive news is that United are seriously looking at signing a centre-back this summer. Whoever that may end up being, Harry Maguire definitely needs help.

Maguire showed just last night what he’s capable of with a proper partner standing alongside him. He was probably the best player on the pitch – that’s despite the fact it was his first game in the best part of two months.

Varane would be my choice purely because of his experience and winning mentality. Though I do why a move for White is attractive as that Premier League experiences means he could slot right into the team from day one and do a great job.
