Man United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.
For the whole summer, Manchester United Football Club have been pursuing Frenkie de Jong.
The saga has swung back and forth numerous times. One week it looks like a move is a sure-fire thing. The next, De Jong is admitting he remains committed to FC Barcelona.
It foes without saying, Erik ten Hag has based his whole idea around reuniting with De Jong and building his starting line-up around his fellow Dutchman.
However, the latest update in the saga is a pretty negative one for we United fans – and it comes from the usually reliable Fabrizio Romano.
Apparently, United have been told a deal is ‘now stalling’, with De Jong’s agents informing Barca that he still has no intention to leave. On top of that, the midfielder is not accepting any salary reduction…
This is obviously a huge transfer blow for United in pursuit of their key target, though I wouldn’t give up hope completely just yet. Barca, who are close to signing Raphinha, are still struggling financially. So they may well push De Jong out of the door regardless of his wishes to stay.
At what point do United just give up and look at other options? Seriously, they’ve spent so much time chasing De Jong. To lose out on him now would be an abject failure.
The club have already been linked with moves for the likes of Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves as back-ups. But perhaps it’s now time to firm up interest in those two players with some sort of official bid? The last thing the club would want is to then miss out on these two players because they’ve wasted too much time on De Jong…
I can only imagine just how frustrated Ten Hag will be if this De Jong deal doesn’t happen at this point. Like I say, there’s still a slim chance the transfer gets done, but I’m not sure continuing the pursuit is worth the risk at this point.
