A Man United move to sign Matthijs de Ligt appears to be edging ever closer.

Manchester United are now seemingly pushing harder to bolster their transfer squad. With the first pre-season game set to take place in one weeks’ time, Erik ten Hag is no doubt trying to get things done behind the scenes.

The top priority remains a new centre-half. Raphael Varane has left. His minutes need replacing with genuine quality as the rest of the back line have not displayed any consistency whatsoever.

The name most linked with filling that void is Matthijs de Ligt, with the Bayern Munich man now at the front of the queue after some brief interest in Jarrad Branthwaite.

Now, CaughtOffside have provided the latest on that front, claiming that United are progressing with their talks to seal the £38m deal to acquire De Ligt.

According to some sources, the move to sign the player is now considered ‘imminent’, as De Ligt is keen for a reunion with Ten Hag.

We have to remember that De Ligt is currently away with the Netherlands squad at the European Championship, so I’d be surprised if we hear anything concrete on that front over the next week or so.

All parties seem willing to get this move done and at under £40m, this could be an excellent piece of business, assuming De Ligt can steer clear of injuries and form a bond with Lisandro Martinez at the heart of the back four.

It will likely be mid-August before we see De Ligt in action for the Reds, as United have been giving their players three weeks off – starting from the time they play their final game for their country.
