Man United name youthful 29-man squad for Spain training camp

Erik ten Hag has named a 29-man squad filled with youth for Man United as they head over to Spain for a training camp.

Manchester United stars are shining brightly at the World Cup. Credit where it’s due, I don’t think any other club side is enjoying more success than the Red Devils over in Qatar right now.

I guess the strength in depth at United is further highlighted by the fact that there are some truly elite players still at home. David de Gea, Victor Lindelof and Anthony Martial, just to name a few.

No doubt these guys are enjoying the mid-season break, with this representing a chance to rest up, recharge and refocus ahead of the second half of the season starting later this month.

Before that is a training camp in Spain, during which two matches will be played. United have named a 29-man squad for this camp, including two notable absentees; Jadon Sancho and Axel Tuanzebe.

Sancho is apparently undergoing an individual training programme. Sadly, it seems he’s hurting right now. I truly wish him nothing but the best. No doubt we’ll see him back to his peak form soon. We’ll have a full article on him shortly.

The other absence; Axel Tuanzebe. He’s continuing to work on a personal training programme after dealing with an injury he suffered back in the summer. He’s not too far away, but this trip comes a little too soon.

In terms of the players that have made the cut, it’s a very youthful squad. Several of United’s FA Youth Cup-winning side are included, along with the likes of Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage – both of whom impressed during pre-season tour.

Check out the 29-man squad (via ManUtd.com) in full here:

Goalkeepers: De Gea, Heaton, Bishop, Dubravka.

Defenders: Lindelof, Wan-Bissaka, Williams, Mengi, Bernard, Jurado, Hardley, Bennett, Oyedele, Murray, Fredricson.

Midfielders: Van de Beek, McTominay, Savage, Iqbal, Hansen, Gore, Mainoo.

Forwards: Martial, Elanga, Shoretire, Garnacho, Hugill, McNeill, Emeran.

More than anything, this is a chance for these younger guys to impress Ten Hag and potentially get inside his thoughts ahead of the resumption of domestic football. With plenty of games still to be played, there’s an opportunity there for those that prove their worth.

I love situations like this. It’s why I enjoy watching pre-season. You get to watch players you don’t normally watch and there’s something I genuinely like doing.

Games against Cadiz and Real Betis this week will be a good acid test to see how far these younger United players have come.
