Man United have been named as a club that could be potentially interested in signing Nuno Mendes.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils have a fair few transfer market needs heading into a massive summer transfer window. It’s fair to say left-back isn’t amongst them.
That isn’t stopping Manchester United though, who have been linked with a move for Sporting’s Nuno Mendes over the last 24 hours. The story comes from Correio da Manha (Tuesday print edition), translated via Sport Witness.
Apparently, United are named as one of the clubs ‘most interested’ in signing the emerging 18-year-old, who’d eventually cost £35m (€40m), plus bonuses.
The Portuguese media outfit go strong, stating that ‘Manchester is on the horizon’, with Manchester City also interested. That’s despite the fact that the player himself recently claimed he’d be staying in Lisbon for at least another year.
It’s inevitable that Mendes will move on eventually, though the decision to publicly admit his desire to remain with Sporting was the same ploy used by Bruno Fernandes, who actually shares an agent with Mendes (Miguel Pinho). Perhaps we’re seeing the same scenario playing out once again.
With Luke Shaw firmly in the driving seat and Alex Telles a more than capable backup, I’d be surprised if Mendes would be willing to make the move to Old Trafford at this stage in his career.
After enjoying an outstanding breakthrough campaign in his homeland, why upset your own development by moving to a place where it’s highly unlikely you’ll be playing reserve team football for the foreseeable future?
For United, a left-back is probably the last thing they need right now. Honestly, this one seems like an absolute non-starter to us, but we’ll continue to cover every single transfer rumour nonetheless.
