Man United not expected to make another offer to sign Jarrad Branthwaite

Man United will not make another move for Jarrad Branthwaite, unless Everton lower their asking price.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move to sign Jarrad Branthwaite this summer, as Erik ten Hag looks to add another defender to the books.

Raphael Varane’s minutes need replacing with genuine quality and no doubt the Everton man would be a solid signing. However, all has gone stagnant on that front as the Merseyside club want close to £70m to allow one of their key figures to leave.

Now, the I Newspaper have provided a snippet of information on that front, reaffirming the belief that United are ‘not expected’ to make another offer to sign the £35k-a-week star. However, plans could change if Everton’s asking price is lowered.

These reports would also explain heavy links to Matthijs de Ligt, with United seemingly looking at alternative options to the Englishman, who would cost more than the Reds’ transfer budget before player sales. I do not believe United are in a position to splash that sort of cash on one player.

It’s all well and good claiming that the situation may change if the asking price is lowered, though it’s going to require a huge drop in valuation. Everton want £70m. United’s initial offer was around £43m after add-ons and bonuses. Can that sort of gap be bridged? I’d be surprised.

When all is said and done, I’m not convinced there’s an awful lot in skill level between Branthwaite and De Ligt. The latter is certainly the better player right now, though he’s had his fair share of injuries. If I had to choose, I’d give the Everton man a slight edge due to his Premier League experience, though the difference is minimal.
