Man United are not planning on bringing in Wout Weghorst permanently.

Manchester United had to bring in Wout Weghorst as a stop-gap signing in the January transfer window, following Cristiano Ronaldo spitting his dummy out.

Anthony Martial’s fitness has remained mixed, which has meant plenty of minutes for Weghorst. The Dutchman has done some excellent work, though his pitiful two goals just haven’t been enough.

As a result, we’ve all grown in doubt about signing Weghorst permanently. Now, the Manchester Evening News have delivered the news we all expected. United are ‘not planning’ on signing the 30-year-old permanently this summer.

Weghorst will now head back to Burnley this summer, who have recently been promoted back to the Premier League. Whether or not he fits into the Clarets’ plans for 2023/24 is another matter entirely.

For all of his brilliant work rate, team playing and hold-up play, United need a striker that will guarantee goals. It’s clear that Weghorst’s not the striker we need to move forward.

As a third or fourth choice option, I wouldn’t be against keeping Weghorst around because he can do a very specific job. I get that it’s a long shot and probably won’t happen, but at least he fights for the badge every single time he pulls on the shirt – and he’s always been readily available to play when we’ve needed him.

I guess it all depends on how the summer plays out. United need to sign a top class striker. Though with the club ownership still up in the air, it remains to be seen what the transfer budget will look like. I genuinely wouldn’t be surprised if the Glazer family stay in charge, then look to loan Weghorst again…
