Manchester United could be closing in on a deal to bring Darwin Nunez to Old Trafford.
I’d imagine that Erik ten Hag is already working hard behind the scenes to get deals done. He looks around and watches Manchester City and Liverpool already making signings. His Red Devils have to do the same.
In terms of positions of need, well, you can pretty much take your choice. There are gaping holes all over this squad that need to be filled as quickly as possible.
An attacker of some description absolutely has to be signed. Darwin Nunez’s name seems to be consistently cropping up in the headlines.
Over the weekend, a report from Give Me Sport left us feeling rather positive about our chances at acquiring Nunez this summer.
Dean Jones was providing an update, claiming that a source is telling him United are now ‘extremely close’ to signing the 22-year-old attacker from SL Benfica this summer.
However, the Old Trafford club does face competition, with Atletico Madrid still showing an interest in signing the man from Uruguay.
United have always enjoyed success when buying from Portugal. Couple that with Nunez feeling like a good fit for the Ten Hag system and this does give off the impression as an ideal first signing.
However, Nunez would not come cheap. He’s scored goals by the bucketload this term, which has drove the price-tag up pretty significantly.
I also worry about Atletico Madrid and other clubs showing a serious interest. Nunez will not be short of offers from Champions League sides. In the end, the lack of top-tier European football on the table may well prove to be our downfall in this pursuit.
