Manchester United have needed a new, top-class centre-half for at least two or three years. This summer has been filled with links to defenders, although as of yet, none have been signed.
The one name that constantly appears on the back pages is that of Harry Maguire. Bids have been made, Leicester City have turned them down. Well now the Red Devils may finally have lift off…
The story comes from the Irish Independent, who state that United are now ready to meet Leicester City’s £80million asking price for the 26-year-old Maguire – but only when Romelu Lukaku’s sale is confirmed.
Just yesterday, Lukaku took to social media to strongly hint at a move away from Old Trafford this summer, and it does feel as though the forward will be confirming his exit in the not too distant future.
Maguire actually played in a pre-season game for Leicester against Stoke City on Saturday, but the Foxes now believe that could have been his last game wearing their blue strip, as a United move seemingly draws closer.
£80million is a lot of money, but Maguire would be more than worth it. He’d immediately become the best centre-back at the club as soon as he walks through the door, while his on-field and dressing room leadership qualities would be vital.
