Manchester United’s summer transfer window has started pretty slowly in terms of incomings.
Daniel James will be the Red Devils’ first signing, although many more simply has to follow.
Today, clubs in England unveiled their list of players who’ll be released on free transfers. According to Sky Sports, both Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia have left Old Trafford.
However, to many’s surprise, Juan Mata’s name wasn’t on there. The report from Sky adds that the 31-year-old Spaniard has been offered a new deal – although it’s unclear as to whether he has accepted the contract.
After signing from Chelsea over five years ago now, I’ve always felt like United have utilised Mata incorrectly. He’s often been stuck out on the wing when his best position, unquestionably, is through the middle.
If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans to give Mata his chance as the starting #10 then this move certainly makes sense. He’s arguably the most creative player at the Theatre of Dreams and you can see why the Reds would want to keep him.
My concern is that Mata will have offers aplenty from elsewhere. Why should he stay? We’ve hardly given him a reason to stick around, but United obviously want to prolong his stay in Manchester.
I guess it won’t be too long before we find out his official decision.
