Manchester United have several players who are out of contract this summer, but it looks as though they’re doing what they can to tie as many players as possible down to new deals.
According to the Evening Standard, Ashley Young is the latest to have been offered a new one-year deal, joining Juan Mata in that regard, while talks with Ander Herrera are still continuing.
It’s a tough situation where Young is concerned. United don’t tend to offer anything more than one-year contracts to players over the age of 30 which is understandable, but you can see why he wants a longer deal as he’s pretty much always playing.
That’s down to his versatility. The fact that he can do a solid job in pretty much every field on the pitch certainly plays into his advantage, but he certainly isn’t getting any younger aged 33.
As each season goes by the performance level is dropping slightly. Against Burnley last night, Young struggled. His crossing was wayward and positionally he was poor at times. With all that said, though, I’d keep him around. He’s a brilliant squad player to have and that experience he offers is absolutely vital in those high-pressure situations.
