Man United have passed up on an opportunity to sign Denzel Dumfries in a swap deal.
Manchester United Football Club still need new signings, in order to truly turn this squad into one that Erik ten Hag fully trusts and believes in.
One player who was initially deemed surplus to requirements, before turning things around, was Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Now, I’d argue he’s the most reliable full-back at the club. However, you still get the feeling the gaffer will move on from the Englishman at some point.
According to The Sun, United have turned down the chance to use Wan-Bissaka in a ‘shock’ swap deal for Serie A player, Denzel Dumfries.
It is claimed the Italian club offered the Dutchman to the Red Devils for Wan-Bissaka, though the Old Trafford side said no.
Wan-Bissaka’s contract was due to expire this summer, with United choosing to activate a one-year extension clause in the deal, keeping him around for at least another year.
Dumfries has actually started more games for Inter than Wan-Bissaka has for United, hence, it’s a surprise move from the Italian side.
The Reds have been linked with Dumfries already under Ten Hag’s reign, with Dumfries another whose contract situation is far from secure. His Inter deal expires in 2025, with the club offering £35,000-a-week for the player to re-sign. He wants closer to £80,000-a-week…
No doubt United would be able to pay him more, though the fact that they’ve said no does hint that they’re more comfortable with Wan-Bissaka than perhaps we realised.
I still think ‘The Spider’ is an excellent option to have for his defensive qualities. He can completely shut down his side of the field on any given day.
